Does aluminum foil keep ants off hummingbird feeders?

No. Ants walk over aluminum foil without difficulty — it is a smooth dry surface, which is not an obstacle to an insect that routinely climbs bark and glass. There is no mechanism behind the tip. What genuinely stops ants is water: a moat hung between the hook and the feeder, which they will not cross.

Why the tip does not work
The claimed mechanisms are usually that ants dislike the texture, that the reflection disorients them, or that the metal interferes with their scent trail. None of these survives contact with an ant.
Ants routinely traverse bark, painted metal, glass and plastic. A smooth, dry, room temperature strip of foil is simply another surface. Reflection is irrelevant to an insect that navigates chiefly by pheromone trail and touch. And a pheromone trail is laid down on whatever surface is there, foil included.
It is a tip that has spread because it is free, harmless, and easy to try — not because anyone has observed it working.
What does work
Water. An ant moat is a small cup hung between the hook and the feeder, filled with plain water. Ants come down the wire, reach water, and stop. Audubon describes feeders equipped with moats to drown ants and attachable ant guards that trap the invaders.

The other half of the answer
Ants find a feeder because it is sticky. A dripping inverted-bottle feeder lays a trail of nectar down its own outside and onto the ground, and that trail is what recruited the colony in the first place.
So the complete fix is two parts: a moat to block the route from above, and a saucer feeder that cannot drip so there is nothing to advertise. Why bottle feeders drip.
While we are here — other things not to use
- Petroleum jelly or oil on the wire. It does deter ants and it can damage a hummingbird’s feathers, which is a bad trade at any effectiveness.
- Insecticide or ant powder. Audubon warns pesticides can injure, kill and reduce population numbers of birds, bees and other animals.
- Sticky tape on the hanger. Catches whatever touches it, including things you did not intend.
- Cinnamon, chalk lines, coffee grounds. Occasionally suggested. Even where they slow an ant on flat ground, they do nothing on a vertical wire in the rain.
The pattern across all of these is the same: a barrier the ants can simply walk around, or a substance that harms the birds you put the feeder up for. Water does neither.

What doesn’t
- Does nothing whatsoever for bees or wasps; that is a port-size problem
- Needs topping up, and an empty moat is worse than none because you stop checking
- Only useful on a hanging feeder — a pole-mounted feeder needs a different answer

Cleaning access
Two parts. The cover lifts off the base with no tools and no threads to cross, and the whole dish is one open bowl — a two-minute wash with a brush and hot water, which is exactly the cadence a nectar feeder needs. The moat is part of the lid, so there is no separate accessory to lose or forget to refill.
What works
- Saucer design puts nectar below the ports, so it does not drip as the air inside warms
- Ant moat is integral to the lid rather than a separate hanging accessory
- Opens to a single shallow bowl — the easiest shape in the category to scrub
- Raised ports shed rain, which keeps the nectar from being diluted
