Why a window feeder is worth having
A hummingbird at a pole feeder is a small bright thing across the yard. A hummingbird on the glass is an animal you can see breathing. It is the single biggest upgrade in the category for anyone who mostly watches from indoors, and it costs less than a camera feeder.

The collision question, answered properly
People worry that a feeder on the glass will cause window strikes. The counter-intuitive answer is that very close is safer than middle distance. A bird taking off from a feeder mounted on the pane has no room to build up speed. The dangerous distance is several feet away, where a startled bird can accelerate into what looks like open sky reflected in the glass.
So mount it on the window or well away from it, and avoid the middle. If you already have strikes at that window, external screens or closely-spaced markings on the outside surface are the established fix, and they work with a window feeder rather than against it.
Mounting that survives summer
- Clean the glass first. Rubbing alcohol, then dry. Suction cups fail on residue more often than on age.
- Mount on the inside face where possible? No — these mount outside, on the exterior pane. Do the alcohol clean on that side.
- Re-check after the first hot week. Heat cycles are what break the seal. Push the cups back down; do it again in autumn.
- Prefer a bracket if the option exists. The Jewel Box includes deck-mount hardware. A bracket is not a suction cup and does not care about the weather.
- Think about what is underneath. Glass on suction cups above a patio is a different risk from plastic above a flowerbed.
Cleaning, which matters more here than anywhere
Every feeder needs washing every few days. A window feeder is the one where you will actually see that it needs it, because it is at eye level and lit from behind. That is a feature — it removes the guesswork — but it also means a badly-designed one becomes an eyesore fast.

What we’d skip
Window feeders that mount with a single small suction cup
One cup carrying a filled reservoir is a failure waiting for the first hot afternoon, and the failure mode is a feeder full of sugar water landing on whatever is below your window. Look for either multiple cups or, better, a bracket — the Jewel Box ships with deck-mount hardware precisely because suction cups are a compromise. Whatever you buy, clean the glass with rubbing alcohol before mounting and re-check the cups after the first heatwave.
