Why glass, specifically
The case for glass is usually made on looks, and that is the weakest version of it. The real argument is optical honesty. Polycarbonate exposed to sugar water and sunlight develops a permanent haze after a couple of seasons — not dirt, and no amount of scrubbing removes it. Once a reservoir is hazed, you cannot tell by looking whether the nectar has gone cloudy, and looking is how most people decide it is time to wash the thing. Glass does not do this. Year three looks like year one.

What glass costs you
Three things, and they are all real. Glass breaks, which rules it out for a pole in a windy spot or anywhere the feeder hangs over a hard surface. Glass is heavy — a full 24 oz glass reservoir is a serious load on a thin shepherd’s hook. And glass feeders are nearly always inverted-bottle designs rather than saucers, which means they inherit the bottle’s drip behavior: warm the air trapped above the nectar and it pushes liquid out of the ports.
That last one is worth sitting with, because dripping is what brings the bees. If your yard already has a bee problem, a glass bottle feeder is working against you and a saucer with fitted bee guards is working for you. The full trade-off is in glass vs plastic.
What to check before you buy
- Does the base detach? This is the whole game. A glass reservoir is easy to wash; a base with six ports molded into it is not, unless it comes off.
- Is the mouth wide? A narrow bottle neck will not take a standard 1.5in bottle brush, and you will end up rinsing rather than scrubbing.
- Is there a moat, or do you need one? Both Kingsyard models and the More Birds Ruby include one. If yours does not, add a separate moat.
- How heavy is it full? Nectar weighs roughly as much as water. Twenty-four ounces plus the glass is not nothing.
Glass on a window
The one place glass most clearly earns its price is a window feeder, because that is the feeder you look at from two feet away. The Perky-Pet 455-2 is tempered glass at 14 oz with two ports, and the bottle twists off while the flower ports pull out — so nothing is sealed. Fully disassembles — reservoir, base and ports all come apart, which is what you want, because a six-port base has six places for residue to sit. The glass reservoir is the easy part; plan on a port brush for the flowers.

Cleaning access
The flat base detaches and the bottle opening is wide, so you can reach every surface. Glass is the real advantage: it does not hold the cloudy film polycarbonate develops after a couple of seasons of sugar water, so 'clean' and 'looks clean' stay the same thing.

What we’d skip
Ornamental hand-blown feeders sold as garden art
Sealed or near-sealed decorative bottles are sold on how they catch the light and nothing else. They usually have no ant moat, ports you cannot remove, and a reservoir opening too narrow for a bottle brush. You will be able to see the mold and not reach it — the worst combination glass can offer. If the listing does not say how it comes apart, assume it does not.

Do glass hummingbird feeders keep nectar cooler?
Not meaningfully. Both glass and plastic sit at ambient temperature within an hour of being hung. What actually keeps nectar fresher is shade — a feeder in full afternoon sun spoils faster whatever it is made of.
Are glass hummingbird feeders dishwasher safe?
The glass reservoir usually is; the plastic base and ports usually are not, and the heat can warp them. Check the manufacturer’s own instruction rather than assuming — First Nature, for instance, specifically says warm soapy water and not the dishwasher.
Will a glass feeder crack in winter?
It can, if nectar is left in it and freezes — water expands as it freezes and glass does not. In most of the country the feeder is down before that matters. Empty and store it rather than leaving it full.
Do glass feeders leak less than plastic ones?
No — leaking is a function of the design, not the material. Almost all glass feeders are inverted bottles, which is the design that drips. A plastic saucer leaks less than a glass bottle. See feeders that don’t leak.
