Two additional closed flower ports are listed in the box.

If you are cross-shopping a different Bird Buddy listing, read that listing’s own spec block rather than assuming it carries over. The camera is genuinely the best here

A hummingbird is a hard photographic subject: small, iridescent, frequently backlit against bright sky, and beating its wings dozens of times a second. The two figures that matter most are the field of view and the sensor, not the headline resolution.

A 122-degree field of view is wide enough that a bird arriving at an angle is still in frame — the common failure of narrower camera feeders is a perfect exposure of an empty port. Five megapixel stills are more than enough for the thing people actually do with these images, which is look at them on a phone.

The membership detail, stated plainly

Bird Buddy’s page describes the video as 2K, “up to 2K Ultra with Premium membership”, and offers an optional annual Family Premium membership with a one-month free trial.

We think that is worth pulling out of the spec block and saying directly: part of what you read as the headline video capability sits behind a recurring fee. The feeder works without it and still records. But if you are buying on the strength of the top video mode, you are buying a subscription as well as a device, and that is a different purchase from a feeder you buy once.

This is not a scandal and Bird Buddy is not hiding it — it is written on the page. It is simply the kind of thing that is easy to skim past when you are comparing two numbers across two tabs, and it changes the arithmetic over a few years. Check what renews before you buy any smart feeder, this one included.

As a feeder, rather than as a camera

Fourteen ounces is a modest reservoir for a premium product, and the port arrangement is unremarkable. That is not really a criticism — nobody buys a camera feeder for its capacity-per-dollar — but it is worth being clear that you are not also getting the best feeder in the yard.

Cleaning is where the trade bites. Bird Buddy’s own guidance is to clean the nectar basin at least every second time you refill it, and a cleaning brush is included. The basin design helps, because an open reservoir you can reach into beats a sealed bottle, and the camera module detaches. It is still the slowest wash of anything we cover, and it has to happen on the same relentless two-to-five-day cycle as every other feeder. Sugar water does not care how much the housing cost.

If a short cleaning routine is what keeps you doing it — and for most people it is — read the easiest feeders to clean before committing to any camera model.

Where it is weak

• Premium bracket, modest reservoir. Fourteen ounces is what you get for the top price in the category.
• The best video mode is membership-linked. Covered above.
• Slowest cleaning here. Every camera feeder trades wash speed for footage, and wash speed is what keeps nectar safe.
• Battery and solar are a system to maintain. A month per charge is good; it is still one more thing that can be flat on the morning something interesting shows up.

Who should not buy this

1. Anyone who wants more hummingbirds rather than pictures of them. Two plain saucer feeders in different parts of the yard will show you more birds than one camera feeder, for a fraction of the money. That is not a knock on the product — it is a different purchase, and the honest one to name.
2. Anyone who already finds the cleaning schedule a chore. This is the feeder where it becomes one.
3. Anyone unwilling to hold a subscription. You can use it without one. Just buy it knowing which capabilities you are and are not getting.
4. Anyone whose main frustration is missing visits on the far side. That is a coverage problem, and two cameras solve it better than one good one.
