How we ranked these
Four questions, applied identically to every feeder:
- How many motions to open it? Lift-off is best, quarter-turn is fine, a long thread is a daily tax and cross-threads when you are in a hurry.
- How many parts, and does every surface become reachable? A base that separates from the reservoir exposes the underside of the ports, which is where mold starts.
- Will a standard brush fit? A 13.5-inch bottle brush with 1.5-inch bristles is the common size. A narrow neck defeats it.
- Is there anything you cannot see into? Hidden volume is where the problem grows unnoticed — which is also why a hazed plastic reservoir is a real drawback.
Why a whole page about this
Because it is the only feeder attribute that has a welfare consequence.
Nectar needs changing every three to five days in moderate weather and daily when it is hot, with a full break-down wash at least weekly. That is somewhere between forty and a hundred washes across a season. A feeder that takes two minutes gets those washes. One that takes ten minutes and involves a fight with a base you cannot grip does not — not because anyone decided to stop, but because it slips, and then slips again.
Mold and fermentation are what harm hummingbirds, and they are what those washes prevent. So the design question and the safety question are the same question, which is why our methodology weights it the way it does.
Saucers beat bottles here, structurally
Four of the five picks above are saucers, and that is not a coincidence or a brand preference. A dish feeder has one open reservoir you can see and reach into completely. A bottle has a reservoir you look into through a neck and a base with ports underneath. Even a good bottle — the First Nature earns its place with a genuinely wide mouth and a base that twists apart — is more work than a mediocre saucer.

If you already own a hard-to-clean feeder
Three things, in order of usefulness. Buy a port brush, because it is cheap and it reaches the one surface that matters. Move the feeder into afternoon shade, which slows spoilage and buys you time. And fill it half full, so each change wastes less and therefore feels less like something to put off.
If it still keeps growing mold, the feeder is the problem rather than you. Replacing a twelve-dollar decorative bottle with a twenty-five-dollar dish is a small purchase that removes a recurring failure. The mold page has the diagnosis.

Two parts. The cover lifts off the base with no tools and no threads to cross, and the whole dish is one open bowl — a two-minute wash with a brush and hot water, which is exactly the cadence a nectar feeder needs. The moat is part of the lid, so there is no separate accessory to lose or forget to refill.

Better than the price suggests. The reservoir mouth is wide enough to take a bottle brush without contortions, and the base twists into two pieces so you can reach the underside of the ports — the spot that grows mold first on a cheap bottle feeder. First Nature specifies warm soapy water, not the dishwasher.

Fully disassembles — reservoir, base and ports all come apart, which is what you want, because a six-port base has six places for residue to sit. The glass reservoir is the easy part; plan on a port brush for the flowers.

What we’d skip
Any feeder whose listing does not say how it comes apart
Manufacturers who have solved this say so, in the first three bullets, because it is a selling point — Aspects leads with the easy-open cover, First Nature leads with the two-part base, Perky-Pet says outright that the 217 comes apart completely. A listing that talks only about capacity, colors and how many birds it attracts is describing a feeder whose maker had nothing to say about cleaning. That silence is the answer.
