The best hummingbird feeder brushes

Buy a three-piece kit with a bottle brush, a socket brush and a port brush. Typical kits run a 13.5-inch bottle brush with 1.5-inch bristles, an 8-inch socket brush, and an 8.25-inch port brush. The port brush is the one that earns the purchase — it is the only tool that reaches inside a feeding port, and the inside of a feeding port is where mold starts.

The three brushes and what each is for
The bottle brush
Typically about 13.5 inches long with 1.5-inch bristles. For the reservoir. It needs to fit through the opening, which is a genuine constraint on narrow-necked decorative feeders — another reason we recommend a wide mouth.
One sizing warning: a standard 13.5-inch brush does not reach the bottom of a tall 32 oz reservoir. If you own a large bottle feeder, check the length before you buy.
The socket brush
Around 8 inches with 1-inch bristles. For the base and the wider recesses. On a saucer feeder this often does the whole job on its own.
The port brush
Around 8.25 inches and much thinner. This is the important one.
A feeding port is a narrow, warm, sugar-coated channel that running water flows past rather than through. It is the first place mold appears and the last place anyone cleans. Nothing else in your kitchen fits inside it. If you buy nothing else, buy this.
It matters even more on feeders with fitted bee guards: Nectar-Guard tips have a narrowing where residue collects, so the HummZinger line’s guarded models genuinely need one.
What to check before buying
- Is a port brush actually included? Kit contents vary by seller and this is the piece most often missing. Some “3-piece” kits are three sizes of bottle brush.
- Nylon bristles. Non-scratching on both glass and polycarbonate.
- Length against your feeder. Especially for tall reservoirs.
- A hanging loop. Sounds trivial; it is how the brushes dry, and a brush stored damp in a drawer grows its own problem.
Looking after the brushes
Rinse them when you rinse the feeder, shake them out, and hang them to dry bristles-down. Replace them when the bristles splay — a splayed port brush no longer enters a port, which means it has silently stopped doing the one job it was bought for.
What a brush cannot fix
A brush reaches what it can reach. If your feeder does not come apart — sealed base, fixed ports, narrow neck — no brush solves that, and the mold will keep returning. Cleaning access
Two parts. The cover lifts off the base with no tools and no threads to cross, and the whole dish is one open bowl — a two-minute wash with a brush and hot water, which is exactly the cadence a nectar feeder needs. The moat is part of the lid, so there is no separate accessory to lose or forget to refill.
What works
- Saucer design puts nectar below the ports, so it does not drip as the air inside warms
- Ant moat is integral to the lid rather than a separate hanging accessory
- Opens to a single shallow bowl — the easiest shape in the category to scrub
- Raised ports shed rain, which keeps the nectar from being diluted
What doesn’t
- 12 oz is small for a busy yard
- Polycarbonate clouds over several seasons in a way glass does not

Cleaning access
Same two-part twist base and wide-mouth reservoir as the 16 oz, so the method does not change — but you are washing a bigger bottle on the same two-to-five-day cycle, and the reservoir is tall enough that a short brush will not reach the bottom.
What works
- Genuinely useful where a yard empties a 16 oz feeder in a day
- Same easy-clean two-part base as the smaller model
- Ten ports spread out the traffic that justifies buying this size
What doesn’t
- Most yards will pour out more spoiled nectar than the birds drink
- Tall reservoir needs a long bottle brush, not the one in a standard kit
- A full 32 oz bottle is heavy — check what you are hanging it from

What we’d skip
Wire-cored brushes with stiff or metal bristles
They scratch. A scratched polycarbonate reservoir hazes faster and holds residue in the scratches, and a scratched port is a better home for mold than a smooth one. Nylon bristles are standard on the purpose-made kits for exactly this reason — they clean sugar residue without marking glass or plastic. If a brush feels like it would clean a barbecue, it is the wrong brush.
